SD91 Assessments

Overview

Primary Grades (K-3)

Kindergarten are assessed with the Early Years Evaluation (EYE-DA) assessment which focuses on a variety of developmental areas.

At the end of grades 1 & 2  as well as in November of grade 3, teachers are required use the PM Benchmarks reading assessment to measure reading growth.  Most also use it throughout the year at reporting periods to monitor in an ongoing way to see if learners are pulling all their reading skills together to read books.

Teachers also use a variety of screeners to assess the following skills in literacy: letter/sound knowledge; phonological awareness, high frequency words. It is recommended that these screeners involve the writing/spelling of letters and words and not just reading them.

Teachers are also encouraged to use the SNAP Number sense assessment to formatively assess learner's ability to reason about developmentally appropriate numbers starting in Grade 2.

Intermediate/Middle Grades (4-9)

The only district required literacy assessment in grades 4-9 is a nonfiction cross-curricular reading assessment (CCR) at the end of 3 and in fall and spring of grades 5 and 8.

Learners in grades 6 and 9 are required to be assessed using the grade-appropriate number sense assessment (SNAP).

Learners in grades 4 and 7 are also assessed province-wide using the BC Foundational Skills Assessment (FSA)

Secondary Grades (10-12)

Learners in grade 10 are required to complete the Graduation Numeracy and Literacy Assessment, as part of their graduation requirements.

Learners in Grade 12 are required to complete a second Graduation Literacy Assessment, also required to graduate.

All graduation numeracy and literacy assessments are administered province-wide to all BC students on the Dogwood Diploma path and are scored by markers accredited by the BC Ministry of Education.
