Literacy Interventions

Always begin by reviewing recent assessment information to help you design appropriate and effective literacy interventions.

Please request training from Curriculum Services to administer some assessment tools, or to get support with this process. Having a team of two or more educators from your school collaborating on this is always encouraged.

Most interventions are most effective if scheduled for a minimum of three times a week and are conducted in small groups with an adult.

Assessment tools we often use in Nechako Lakes SD 91 that can be helpful:

For students reading from early gr. 1 to end of grade 2 texts:

  • PM Benchmarks for learners are already reading some books
  • Letter/Sound (reading & spelling) check
  • Phonological/Phonemic Awareness
  • Foundational Structured Literacy (includes letter/sound & phonemic awareness)
  • Words Their Way Spelling Development Inventory

For students in Gr. 4-9

  • Literacy Screeners
  • Some later PM Benchmarks levels (choose age appropriate or nonfiction titles)
  • DRA (Diagnostic Reading Assessment; learner must be able to read end of gr. 2 texts or higher as indicated by a PM Benchmarks assessment)
  • Foundational Structured Literacy (includes letter/sound & phonemic awareness)
  • Words Their Way Spelling Development Inventory

Potential Interventions

Interventions are most effective if scheduled for a minimum of three times a week.

Phonics/Phonemic Development

*pairing reading of and spelling/writing of phonics elements and words is more effective than simply engaging in reading tasks. Reading and writing are intertwined and neurological pathways are stronger when the learning is multimodal.

  • Small group explicit phonics evidence-based phonics instruction (eg. Foundational Structured Literacy, Systematic Sequential Phonics They Use, UFLI University of Florida Literacy Institute)
  • Whole class implementation of small groups using the Words Their Way instructional tools, or something similar that involves following a developmental progression and sorting activities. Curriculum Services offers direct support to assess and implement this.

Phonological Awareness

  • Small group instruction using materials that follow the research based developmental progression. (eg. PAth to Literacy by Brookes Publishing, Foundational Structured Literacy, Heggerty Phonological resources
